Biography

Joey Helleny, Non-Tenure Track, Senior Lecturer is teaching courses in broadcast journalism. For 25 years, Helleny was familiar to news audiences in Southern Illinois as an anchor and reporter on the area's leading radio stations. He also wrote for print publications including the Southern Illinoisan and the St. Louis Globe Democrat. Helleny's professional experience also includes a stint as the Media Director for the Du Quoin State Fair. He served for two years as the Director of SIRIS, a reading service for the blind and visually impaired operated by SIUC.

Since joining the SIUC faculty in 1999, Helleny has also helped oversee the university's student-produced television newscast, The River Region Evening Edition. The newscast has consistently won awards in both national and regional competitions. Helleny was the 2006 recipient of SIU's Outstanding Term Faculty Teaching Award and now serves as the Faculty Advisor for the students in the Illinois News Broadcasters Association.
