News - Speakers and Presentations

The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting presents. Women - Children - Crisis.
Three journalist share their stories - from Nepal, Iraq, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Monday, April 20th, 4-5:15 p.m.
Southern Illinois University Carbondale
Law School Auditorium, 1150 Douglas Drive
The Journalism School - in conjunction with Women's Studies, GMRC and the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute - is bringing three young journalists to campus Monday, April 20 to speak on Women and Children in Crisis.
One will speak about rape as a weapon of war in Congo, another about child indentured servants in western Nepal and the third about the life of a female Iraqi journalist in Baghdad. The presentation will be 4-5:15 p.m. in the law school auditorium. (Download PDF Flyer)
Not only is the substance of the presentation interesting, but also these young journalists are using video and audio to tell their stories. They all are affiliated with the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting.
The speakers are:
Meredith May, the SF Chronicle veteran feature writer (and prof at Mills College/Oakland) who did the project early this month on child indentured servants in western Nepal
Alaa Majeed, Iraqi former McClatchy Baghdad bureau reporter (winner of Courage in Journalism award last year - see award bio below). She is just back from a month in Iraq, successful after three years in getting her two sons, 10 and 7, out of country
Michael Kavanagh, radio journalist now back in eastern Congo on his third month-long trip for Pulitzer Center. Radio pieces for NPR, PRI/The World and tv for WorldFocus, print for Slate. Very strong video/radio work on rape as instrument of war.
