CARBONDALE - A baker's dozen of small towns will be the stars in a photo exhibit that opens Monday at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. The show will run through Dec. 5 in the north wing of the Communications Building.

The show is the product of a "Small Town Documentary" class taught in the Department of Cinema and Photography by Dan Overturf. An opening reception will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, with light refreshments served.

The class, which has been taught every other year since 1996, encourages student photographers to literally immerse themselves in their chosen town and immerse themselves in its culture. And each week, the students share their best prints - and stories - with the rest of the class. They also share prints with the folks they've photographed.

The 13 towns chosen by this year's class are Elkville, Royalton, Hurst, Stonefort, Christopher, Prairie du Rocher, Percy, Mound City, Energy, Lick Creek, Cutler, Pittsburg and Campbell Hill. Samples of the photos can be viewed at www.flickr.com/photos/smalltowndocumentary.

In past years, residents of many of the towns have attended the reception.
