Area Preschool Children Invited to Read for the Record with WSIU Public Broadcasting on October 8

Herrin, IL – On Thursday, October 8 from 10:30am-12pm, WSIU Public Broadcasting and Child Care Resource and Referral are co-sponsoring Read for the Record locally, a free public event for young children. The event will take place at the Raising Readers Library Corner at the Herrin City Library at 120 North 13th Street in Herrin.

Children and families in communities throughout the region are encouraged to help us break the record for the number of people reading together on the same day. One of the best things about reading is that it can take place anywhere and everywhere. Group readings can be held in schools, libraries, child care centers, playgrounds, and homes. Any child and adult can participate just by sitting down to read. Be sure to register at www.readfortherecord.org, where you will find everything you need to have your participation counted on October 8. Early childhood educators are invited to print your registration confirmation and bring it to Child Care Resource and Referral at 700 Logan College Road in Carterville to collect free books for your children while supplies last.

At Herrin City Library and other locations across the region, young children and their parents will read The Very Hungry Caterpillar and participate in a record-breaking celebration of reading. We hope to break the record set last October when 688,000 people read the same book. After reading the story, children will participate in fun activities, receive a certificate of participation and a free book.
