CARBONDALE, Ill. -- SIU Philm: Philosophy and Film Club takes the after-movie discussion to a whole new level at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

The group hosts films followed by a discussion of philosophical concepts led by philosophy department faculty and graduate students, and faculty from other departments or colleges.

Films screen in the new Morris Library Auditorium, and all screenings are free, but a willingness to discuss ideas is encouraged. This semester’s theme is “Culture’s Wake,” or films and discussions about culture clashes.

The remainder of the fall semester schedule is as follows:

• Sept. 28, 6:15 p.m., “Mr. and Mrs. Iyer.” Douglas Berger, assistant professor of philosophy, and graduate student Aisha Raees will lead the discussion. Stephanie Graves, the humanities librarian at Morris, will provide an overview of available library resources.

• Oct. 2, 4:15 p.m., “The Dupes.”  John Downing, the director of the Global Media Research Center, will lead the discussion. Herman Peterson, the head reference librarian, will also be on hand to discuss library resources.

• Oct. 3, Mini-seminar, America’s Cultural Crossroads, noon to 5 p.m., “Seven Crows: A Secret” screens at noon and “Langston Hughes: The Dream Keeper” screens at 3 p.m. The discussion panel is Ken Stikkers from the Department of Philosophy, Novotny Lawrence, from the Department of Radio and Television, and David J. Leitner, a graduate student in the Department of English.
