For years, the University has offered Freshman Interest Group Floors for entering students and various academic emphasis floors geared to bring together students with similar interests. As of last fall, Kellogg Hall is one of three residence halls now dedicated to students who study in the same college. Bailey Hall houses male engineering students while Pierce Hall serves as home for female engineering students.
Before Kellogg Hall became totally dedicated to MCMA students, it already formed the Carbondale home for many of the Collegeís majors. The change to a dedicated residence hall for MCMA majors provides an opportunity for students from Cinema and Photography, Radio-Television, and the School of Journalism to live in a group setting as well as attend many of the same classes. This camaderie benefits the students both personally and academically because many of their class projects involve teamwork. Additionally, Kellogg Hallís close proximity to the Communications building allows students easy access to computer labs and other resources housed in the building.
ìThis has also enabled us to bring a number of activities and services directly to the students in their residence hall,î said Clare Mitchell, Assistant Dean of Student Affairs for the College. Led by faculty coordinator William Recktenwald, Kellogg residents have had the opportunity to enjoy presentations by photojournalist and Journalism faculty member Phil Greer, Radio-Television audio production faculty members Jay Needham and Todd Herreman, and photographer Gary Kolb, who is also the College's Dean as well as a Cinema and Photography faculty member.
Recktenwald, a Pulitzer prize lecturer in the School of Journalism, is a frequent visitor to the hall and acts as a liaison between students and faculty. A newly renovated computer lab in the basement here students can work on papers and other assignments will be opened this spring.
The Kellogg Hall project got kicked off in style when a group of MCMA faculty and staff helped residents move in last August.
In addition, faculty and staff have had dinner with students in Lentz Hall several times and served as judges in the hall's Halloween door decorating contest. A Kellogg group was also treated to a private tour of the New Media Center, located in the Communications Building.
The College wishes to express their appreciation to University Housing and Student Development for their support of this endeavor.
