Wireless Internet is available in select indoor and outdoor locations across the SIU Carbondale campus.
The SIU wireless signal will show up as either SIUC-iv (indoor) or SIUC-ov (outdoor) and to access these WI-FI spots you will need to use Cisco VPN software to connect and authenticate as an SIU student. The range and the availability of this indoor/outdoor network can change and you can find complete coverage maps at wireless.siu.edu/wireless.htm
This is a free service that is provided to Windows, Macintosh, and Linux users who connect with a secure authentication as either SIU student, faculty, or staff by using provided SIU network ID's. This service is also available on select handheld devices such as the iPhone and iPod Touch, Palm handheld, and Windows Pocket PC.
Computer support for SIU student/faculty/staff is available through Information Technology and a full list of services and information can be found at infotech.siu.edu. This also includes special campus software licensing agreements.
The Computer Support Center (campus HelpDesk) is located in the Northwest Annex, A wing, Room 137 (618) 453-5155 or toll free 866-718-4357. If you need assistance after hours, you may contact the IT Network Control Center at (618) 453-6217. They will log your problem and a CSC representative will contact you the next business day. You may also contact the Network Control Center to report an urgent network issue or a campus-wide outage.
These facilities and services include but are not limited to, computers, printers, software, and manuals. Software and manuals are to be checked out for use in the CLC only and must be returned before the closing of the CLC each day. Laptop checkout procedures in CLC2 and CLC3 are posted in each facility. Equipment checkout procedures in CLC4 are posted at CLC4. Customers who do not return materials will be denied access to CLC services for a minimum of seven days. Materials not returned after seven days will be charged to the individual's Bursar Account.
The Computer Learning Center 4 is also referred to as the New Media Center (NMC) and is located in the basement of the Communications building in the Southeast wing.
The NMC is a unique facility on campus. It represents a working partnership between the College and Information Technology embodied in the combination of an open access Computer Learning Center (CLC4) with dedicated classrooms/labs specifically designed to meet the needs of faculty, staff, and students engaged in producing digital media. The Center supports the research, teaching, and service activities of the College and University.
Two specialized classrooms/labs are equipped with enhanced computers, unique peripheral devices, and powerful software to facilitate work in various visual and audio media. The labs support work in digital imaging, web design, multimedia authoring, digital video and audio, MIDI applications, 3D modeling and animation and large format inkjet printing. They support both classes and independent project research by faculty and students. College staff utilize the labs to produce digital media to help disseminate research results, enhance and expand the educational activities of the College, and assist community groups in various projects.
While the Center primarily serves the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts, it is also dedicated to maintaining an open access policy for other members of the university community having need of the unique tools and services available on campus only in the MCMA NMC. Every effort is made to accommodate requests for access to the CenterĂs labs.
Southern Illinois University Carbondale uses a wireless emergency notification system (WENS). In this system, an SIUC Alert is sent to your cell phone as a text-message and/or as an e-mail to your e-mail address.
SIUC Alerts are messages about an emergency. The message may alert you to an emergency situation, ask you to take action, or both. Some weather warnings including flash flood, severe thunderstorm, winter storm, and tornado warnings will also be sent as an SIUC Alert. The messages are short (only 160 characters long). For more detailed information, you may need to go to another source of University emergency information.
Please note that no communication distribution method is infallible. For that reason, SIUC uses redundant systems of emergency communication, including telephone, Internet, e-mail, radio, loudspeakers, person to person, and text messaging, to distribute news and instructions during an emergency.
You can also print out an Emergency Communications Card which lists all of the emergency communications distribution web sites, the Emergency Information Line phone number, buildings with a loud speaker system, and the SIUC Police Emergency Band frequency.
